In this sermon, longtime UUCJ member and Navy veteran Jeff Funderburk reflects on the true meaning of Memorial Day weekend. While sharing the distinct histories behind the “Big Three” military holidays—Armed Forces Day, Veterans Day, and Memorial Day—Jeff honors the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Through the lens of his own military experience flying the SH-3 Sea King helicopter, Jeff shares heartfelt stories of lost friends and squadron mates like Joe King, Jeff Hilliard, and his former roommate Carl Wiegand. He reminds us that in military service, there is no such thing as a “routine training mission,” and invites us all to pause, remember, and offer a collective prayer for permanent peace.
